Medical
student education is a central priority for the GWU Department
of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. We offer an integrated
curriculum spanning the first three years of medical school, combining
evolving neuroscience with humanistic values in patient care.

Psychiatry
faculty participate in the design and implementation of an extensive
problem based learning curriculum for pre-clinical students, covering
normal development, family function in illness, competency, end
of life decisions and similar psychiatric topics related to general
medicine. Psychiatrists also co-lead "Doctor-Patient-Society"
groups with primary care physicians in the Practice of Medicine
(POM) course in years I and II. In addition, the department runs
a semester long course in psychopathology and directs the human
sexuality section of the Introduction to Clinical Medicine course
in year II.
Third
year clerks currently spend two months in the Department of Psychiatry,
a month on an acute general adult psychiatry unit or the consultation
liaison service, and a month in a specialized setting such as
a public mental hospital or an inpatient ward for children. The
department provides seminars for the third year students, including
an innovative role-playing curriculum for introducing students
to the psychiatric problems presented by patients in primary care
outpatient settings. The department is currently collaborating
in a broad curriculum reform designed to increase the third year
students direct experience with psychiatry in ambulatory
care settings.
Fourth
year students are able to set up electives in the department,
tailored to their specific interests and educational goals. Application
information for fourth year electives is obtained through Harolyn
Johnson in the GWU School of Medicine Deans Office: http://www.gwumc.edu/smhs/academic/medicine/electives/index.html
